2020-2021 Academic Calendar Revisions FAQ

2020-2021 ACADEMIC CALENDAR REVISIONS & AMI FAQ

What does Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) mean?
Alternative Methods of Instruction was a new section of RSMo Section 171.033 that went into effect August 28, 2019 for implementation beginning with the 2020-2021 school year. “...a district shall not be required to make up any hours of school lost or cancelled due to exceptional or emergency circumstances during a school year if the district has an alternative methods of instruction plan approved by the department of elementary and secondary education...”

LR submitted its AMI plan and received permission from DESE to utilize AMI for 2020-2021 school year. We planned to use AMI days sparingly, but none of us expected to be in a global pandemic.

What will AMI look like for my child?
AMI plans will support learning on inclement weather days number 1 & 2. Since we typically know about impending weather, teachers will prepare to send materials home (PK-6) or have plans posted within their Canvas course (7-12) that allows for students to continue working on current projects and activities while at home.

  • The focus will be to strengthen and reinforce instructional content while supporting student learning outside of the school environment.
  • Review or reinforcement of previously taught skills.

What if the first inclement weather days do not occur until after Martin Luther King Jr. Day or Presidents’ Day?
Regardless of when the first two (2) inclement weather days occur, they will be AMI days. MLK Jr. Day and President’s Day will be observed holidays (no school).
