Teachers representing the K-5 mathematics curriculum team took part in a professional learning course known as Add+Vantage on February 26^th – March 1^st.  The purpose is to support elementary teachers, special education instructors and math interventionists in diagnosing and advancing student understanding and numeracy development. The four-day course is part one of a two-part series that focuses on early numeracy development.  Course one provides teachers with a strong foundation in whole number topics (i.e. structuring number, addition, subtraction, number words, and numerals) that if not mastered in the early grades may appear later as holes in understanding for older students and interfere with the development of future mathematical understanding. These same teachers will take part in Course two in fall 2018.  The second part of the Add+Vantage training will expand and deepen teachers’ knowledge and understanding of mathematical development for all students and will focus on the use of diagnostic assessments for multiplication, division, and place value understanding.  The district’s goal is to train all K-5 teachers in Add+Vantage over the next three years.
